Friday Tutorial Dump

I'm trying a new thing where I repost all the nifty blogs and tutorials I've read over the week on Friday for your learning pleasure.

This is from awhile ago, but I just discovered it, so perhaps you will discover it too!  It's a nice article about the current if what a designer should be, also this article, where I found this one from.

Morpheus Rig
Not really a tutorial per se, but there is a long tutorial on how to morph it. It's a really in depth rig not only with great controls but the ability to change the body type to make your own character! Very useful for your 3D animation reels. And it's free!

Hand Lettering your comic Part 1 and Part 2
An in-depth look at lettering your comic on the great site, Making Comics.  You are following Making Comics for all their helpful hints and tutorials, right?

The Flow of a Page
Also from Making Comics, but very useful. The first part on different ways to set up the composition of a comic page.

Animation Schooling Advise
This comes from the great blog, Animation Tips & Tricks. The Question asked was how important is a god animation school, but the director describes some good advise on how to go about teaching yourself animation techniques.

Interview with Character Designer Dan Seddon
From the awesome people at the Character Designer blog, a long but knowledgeable interview with Character Designer Dan Seddon.

I'm also going through Maya rigging tutorials, but I haven't gotten through them all yet. I'll let you know how it turns out. Also, I will have a new character up tonight, as soon as I create him, her or it.

sketch dump monday

Oh hey, remember when I said I would post on this blog everyday? I might have been lying in the face there. But I will be positing to day because I have stuff today(and hopefully I will have stuff tomorrow as well)!

First, yesterday was Mother's Day, and I made my mom a card like I always do! I hate making cards WITH A FIERY PASSION but no good gift comes without some strain, right? Plus, I figure whatever I do, even if it's just a silly doodle(which I should be pretty good at since I do them all the time), it'll still have more heart than a store bought hallmark one.

Next, I did some sketches of this random guy from Esquire magazines. I've been known to swipe magazines from family so I can sketch a particularly nice face or pose or body. This guy I mostly liked his face and pants. He had really nice pants.

Look at the creases on those suckers! WHAT. That's what I'm talkin' bout.

Also I did some random robot sketches, because after seeing the rigs at this FREE RIG BLOG(fuck yeah free rig blog) I felt like making a kick ass robot in maya with some cool rigging and animation. Because, y'know, I can just do that on a whim, it's not like it'll take over a month or anything.

I have a general idea of what I'd like, possibly some barrel chested machina with some cool transforming weapons. The problem is with out a purpose there's no character, and no character makes for lousy design. So I'll put this on the backburner to think about.

Lastly, I'm going to do a Sketched Screenings post tomorrow(hopefully) on Thor, and I finished the sketching and inking. I'll color and post it tomorrow(again hopefully).

I took a little liberty and relied more on the ultimate comic version. You're welcome ladies.

Hmm, blogspot's been kinda wonky lately. I may look into better Tumblr options.

That's all for today! Expect more stuff later.

Spider-Shelly and Nicki Widow

So first off, here are today's heroes(cause I felt like doing a pair for some reason)! These took waaaay longer than expected. Mostly because I wanted to do them in flash but then I hated it but I also hated this but I hated this less and so I finished.

Anyways, these are based off my friends Shelly and Nicki who are always attached at the hip. Spider-Shelly is stronger and can jump higher, while Nicki Widow is more agile and can throw venomous spikes. Both can cling to walls and change the color of their costumes so they blend in with the bad guys. Here's some more sketches:
I think from now on I'll ink them and color in photoshop since I need to work on my inking anyways(look at that shaky line work!!!)

Also, I've been trying to get back into modeling, so I've started speed modeling(trying to get a model done in an hour) again. So I set out to model this:

And in an hour and a half I got this:

So tomorrow I should have a new hero up, and I think I'll do a guy this time since I've already done three girls.

Quentin Tarantino: King of Anti-Climacticism 1

For no apparent reason, I've decided that this week is Quentin Tarantino: King of Anti-Climatcicism Week!
(No, it's not a word that I'm aware of)

Not to say that I don't enjoy his movies, but man, are they ever anti-climactic. I could probably do the whole week with just Kill Bill, but I'll try to restrain myself.

Also, here are some pics of the model I started so far!

It's not too much now, but it's still blocky and I haven't modeled for a while. We'll see how it turns out. I used to do a "speed modeling" exercise, similar to those that speed paint in photoshop. I might try something like that for next model.

A cow, pig, and chicken walk into a bar...

She didn't think it was funny. I thought it was HILARIOUS.

And for all the girls I know who wear glasses and think it's you, IT'S NOT YOU.

Also, I'm trying to get back into modeling, so I'm gonna start modeling this guy:

That is, I will be starting when Maya stops quitting on me. GAH!
