Here you can see the start of my main character. I knew it was going to be some sort of sci-fi noir, but I wasn't sure on my main character. At first I was going to use a handyman type guy(on the right) but then I came up with the lady design with the long nose and bowler derby and I just sort of fell in love with her(I'm left handed so I sketch right to left).
More sketches of my main character. I kinda wanted to take a stab at the DC controversy over female characters(Catwoman, Starfire, Voodo), so I decided to make her a burlesque dancer. I wanted to try to prove a story could be written about a sexually liberated character without it being degrading(I hope I accomplished that). And I named her Tammy. The name came partly from Parks and Recreation and partly from an old friend named Tameron. I liked the idea that her stage name would be 'Tammy', her friends would call her 'Tam' or 'Tam Tam', and to strangers she would be Tameron.
Tammy's burlesque costume and some of her fellow dancers. The one in the middle is the one who would become 'Ella'. I just love her weird future clothing here.
I liked the design of the first protagonist, so I worked on it a bit and turned him into Tameron's ex. I figure he's an average joe, working in some sort of mine or factory. What would be overalls in the present are a kind of space pants that may turn into the lower half of his uniform/outfit. There's also Roy who acts as a kind of guardian/doorman for the club, and an unused design, I thought maybe for the owner or a customer.
So I thought maybe there is something that control's people's minds. (there's a saying that if there isn't some otherworld aspect in your sci-fi story and it could just take place at any other time, it's not a good sci-fi story) I started with the brain in a jar idea but I thought that had been a little overused. Then I started to work on the creepy little guy on the left. I hope people think he's severely disturbing. I was going for David Lynch meets Tim Burton.
I hope you guys enjoyed these as I enjoyed making them!
Great character designs! You're really good at cartooning. I'm envious.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'd like to think it's one of my strengths.
